I came up with a few improvements. I don't use a pulse mana spreader, instead just having a whole bunch of mana bursts constantly cycling around at all times. To solve the problem where the hopperhock steals all the saplings, I connected a 1 minute hovering hourglass to a redstone torch, and let the torch disable the sapling hopperhock.
