May 26, 2023 · St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant is the largest source of nuclear power in the state of Florida. The plant received its operating license on March 1, 1976. Since then, the plant has been providing electric power to over a million Florida residencies. The plant is located on Hutchinson Island, which is eight miles southeast of Fort Pierce, Florida. In the ’70s, Florida had three nuclear power plants. Today, Florida is down to two. Those two, in St. Lucie County on Hutchinson Island near Fort Pierce, and at Turkey Point in Homestead in Miami-Dade County, are producing energy through four reactors. The third plant is being decommissioned, a process that has already stretched 15 years.
